Argaty Dupplin: Clathy's grandmother. A frail invalid who walks with the aid of a stick, and who lives in the same apartment as Clathy.

Alva Vale (nee Madderfy): Wife of Merton Vale and daughter of Old Man Madderfy. Sister to Creagan Madderfy.

Alva has an affair with Monzie Hosh, who was the proprietor of the Starfield Club.

Busby Logan: Junior partner in the company of Vale, Madderfy and Logan, Accountants. Partner of Merton Vale and Creagan Madderfy.

Butterstone, Forneth: see Forneth Butterstone.

Clathy Dupplin: A hostess at the Starfield Club. Had an illicit affair with Merton Vale some time ago. She lives in an apartment with her frail grandmother Argaty.

Clunie (Clunie Ford): A hostess at the Starfield Club. Has an illicit affair with Merton Vale. Employs Findo Gask after Vale's death.

Creagan Madderfy: A junior partner in the company of Vale, Madderfy and Logan, Accountants. Partner of Merton Vale and Busby Logan. Son of Old Man Madderfy and brother to Alva Vale.

David: Owner of a diner where Findo Gask eats regularly. He is a short and exceptionally rotund Goblin in a spotless white apron, all bustling bonhomie and avuncular charm.

David often ministers to Findo Gask after the detective is knocked unconscious or otherwise abused, and frequently acts as his confident during intense investigations.

Drummond: An enforcer at Monzie Hosh's Starfield Club.

Findo Gask: The eponymous private detective and occasional bounty hunter, protagonist and narrator, licenced in both the upper world of the humans and the Lower Realms.

Gask is large for a Goblin, standing over four feet ten inches tall. He usually wears an overcoat with capacious pockets and wears a hat.

Ford, Clunie: see Clunie Ford.

Forneth Butterstone: a fussily-dressed confidence trickster oince briefly engaged to Trinity Gask.

Fowlis Wester: A Homicide police Captain. At one time, boss of Inspector Harriet Luncardy.

Wester was influenced by Old Man Madderfy to intercept Findo Gask when he was retrieved from the surface world by Tarsapple.

Gaur: ancient proprietor of a back-street emporium of magical devices and illicit glamours.

Glenshee: Junior member of the (unamed) organisation which exists to return errant Goblins from the surface world to the lower realms. His boss is Tarsapple.

Gumshoe: nickname of Martin Gamshack.

Harriet Luncardy: Police Inspector in the Homicide department. At one time, her boss was Captain Fowlis Wester. She is described as very tall and thin for a female Goblin, and is known to be a stickler for rules and procedures.

After Wester's forced resignation, Luncardy is promoted to the rank of Captain in his place.

Hosh, Monzie: see Monzie Hosh.

Housekeeper at Merton Vale's residence. Attends to Alva Vale both before and after she is widowed.

Later, attends to Clunie Ford in the same house.

Kirkton (Judge Kirkton): Presides at the Probate court session where Merton Vale's last will and testament is read. A stickler for the rule of law, at least as far as it applies to wills.

Madderfy: (Old Man Madderfy) Once senior partner in the firm of Vale, Madderfy and Logan, Accountants, and therefore once Merton Vale's boss.

Old Man Madderfy is now officially retired, although he still keeps a close eye on his many business interests. He is the father of Alva Vale and Creagan Madderfy.

Madderfy, Creagan: see Creagan Madderfy.

Maddoes: The short and wiry bartender at the Deepest Joy bar.

Martin Gamshack: A human Private Detective, based in New York. Known as Gumshoe. Occasional colleague of Findo Gask.

Merton Vale: Senior Partner in the company of Vale, Madderfy and Logan, Accountants. His junior partners are Busby Logan and Creagan Madderfy.

He was married to Alva Vale. He also had an illicit affair with Clunie Ford and, before that, with Clathy Dupplin.

Merton Vale was blackmailed to hand over details of accounts for Monzie Hosh. He employed Findo Gask to identify his blackmailer and was later found dead in Gask's office.

Millearme: A young and earnest-looked lawyer from Pane and Pickles Associates, Attorneys at Law. Present at the reading of Merton Vale's last will and testament.

Monzie Hosh: Proprieter of the Starfield Club. He has an affair with Alva Vale.

Hosh is later found dead in Findo Gask's apartment.

Nether Gask: Brother to Findo Gask. A drunken ne'er-do-well.

Once, Findo Gask had to track down his brother and persuade him to attent their mother's deathbed.

Rosie o'Chill: A human, currently the proprietor of Chill's Bar in New York. Granddaughter of Tighe o'Chill.

Tarsapple: Senior member of the (unamed) organisation which exists to return errant Goblins to the lower realms. He is a surly individual with notched ears.

Tarsapple, together with his junior Glenshee, collects Findo Gask when the detective is stranded topside.

Tighe o'Chill: Rotund and occasionally foul-mouthed proprietor of Chill's Bar in New York, where Findo Gask once located his brother Nether Gask. His granddaughter is Rosie o'Chill.

Trinity Gask: Sister to Findo Gask. She once had to be restrained by Findo Gask from cutting the ears from a Goblin she was to have married when she discovered his infidelity.

Urquhart Garrick: Professor at a university once attended by Findo Gask. An expert in security and protective magic. He has lived secretly in the surface world for the last century or so. Garrick is very intelligent and well-spoken, and has numerous interests in both magic and science.
